4th IPR Researchers’ Confluence

Introduction

The MHRD IPR Chair, SJMSOM, IIT Bombay is pleased to announce one and half day National 4th IPR Researchers’ Confluence on “IP Challenges in Frugal Innovation” from March 27-28, 2015 in Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management, IIT Bombay.

The success of the 1st Confluence was a major source of inspiration for our core committee to organize the next-in-series confluences and international conferences on Intellectual Property Management in India through the support of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, MHRD IPR Chair Project. These conferences and confluences are designed with an aim to extend the MELT (management, economics, legal and technology) platform. The past conferences and confluences details are presented here.

About the 4th IPR Researchers’ Confluence

The 4th IPR Researchers’ Confluence provides a platform for innovators, researchers, faculty, industry practitioners as well as technology start-ups, to engage in an interdisciplinary discussion overlapping intellectual property (IP) and frugal innovation. Frugal innovation encompass high-performing product or process technologies at an affordable price point. Frugal Innovations are characterised by high affordability, robustness and are designed for volume-driven market. It is a unique opportunity for participants to identify and share IP challenges encountered during the ideation, design, and production or implementation stage of the innovation undertaken to achieve frugality.

Objectives of the Confluence

The theme for the 4th IPR Researchers’ Confluence is “IP Challenges in Frugal Innovation”. The objective is to identify challenges posed by intellectual property across various stages in developing frugal innovations, and to explore possible solutions for such challenges.

The format for presentations for the Confluence is case-based, wherein presenters can share their experiences during product or process development for frugal innovations and the challenges encountered during this undertaking.

Guidelines for Case Preparation:

A.      Has IP acted as a roadblock in any stage of product or process development of frugal innovations?

B.      Has the need to circumvent existing IP acted as an enabler for product/process development?

C.       Is there a need to protect any aspect of frugal innovation by legal instruments like intellectual property rights? What are the implications for the same?

D.      Should the IP embedded in the Frugal Innovation be proprietary or open source?

E.      What are the motivations to engage in IP protection for frugal innovations?
