Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

We have compiled general FAQs and queries related to MBA Admissions, Program, and Application form. If you have any queries, that are not answered here, please reach out to the MBA admissions team (admissions@sjmsom.in).

General Queries:

Question 1: Can candidates with a three-year Bachelor degree in any discipline apply for admission to MBA?
Yes. They can apply if they have first class (60% or 6.5 CGPA for General Category) and a valid CAT score.

Question 2: What is the degree being offered by SJMSOM?
The degree offered is "Master of Business Administration" from SJMSOM, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

Question 3Does SJMSOM apply a sectional cut-off?
The cut-offs will be decided after the application process concludes, while shortlisting candidates for personal interviews scheduled from 6th to 9th March 2025.

Question 4: Do we have to choose a specialization in the second year or is it a general MBA?
It is a general MBA. You have the option of choosing electives from SJMSOM and other academic units in IIT Bombay based on your interest. Students also have the option of Finance and Operations Management specialization.

Question 5What is the faculty-student ratio at SJMSOM?
There are 26 "Core Faculty" for approximately 250 MBA students, which works out to a faculty-student ratio of about 1:9.6. If one includes the Professors of Practice, adjunct faculty, and visiting faculty, the ratio will be even better. This is one of the strengths of our program.

Question 6: How is the student exchange program at SJMSOM?
The School has active student exchange programs with many leading international universities/institutions along with other academic units in the institute. The international study tours are also organized for select groups of students every year.

Question 7: Are there any Scholarships offered to MBA students of SJMSOM?
Yes, there are a few scholarships (15 to 20) awarded based on the student’s academic performance.

Question 8: Does the School help in getting educational loans?
We have branches of State Bank of India and Canara Bank on our campus. These banks offer curated educational loans for IIT Bombay students. You may visit the bank’s website for more details.

Admission Form-related Queries:

Question 9: What qualifying degree should a dual degree student select in the application form?
You have to select your undergraduate (UG) degree from the drop-down provided in the qualifying degree. For example, if you are a candidate with B.Tech + M.Tech then you should select B.Tech in the qualifying degree and M.Tech in the Additional Postgraduate/Professional Qualification section. Similarly, if you are a candidate with a B.Com + M.Com, then you should select B.Com in the qualifying degree and M.Com in the Additional Postgraduate/Professional Qualification section.

Question 10: What grade should a dual degree student select in undergraduate marks and postgraduation marks?
Candidates should provide the details of their undergraduate marks as provided by their university in the UG degree details and their Post graduation marks details in the Additional Post Graduate/Professional Qualification.

Question 11: I have a CGPA out of 10 and not a percentage as final marks. Should I convert my CGPA into a percentage and fill the same?
No. If the original grade card mentions CGPA, then you should enter the same even if your institution/university includes a conversion formula.

Question 12: Who will answer queries related to online application and admissions?
The online application portal allows users to report issues related to the application form/process. You may also email your queries to admissions@sjmsom.in.

Personal Interview (PI) and Final Admission-related Queries:

Question 14: What is the minimum GMAT score required for the Shortlisted NRI/OCI/PIO card-holding candidates? Are the candidates exempted from attending PI?
The NRI/OCI/PIO card-holding candidates with a valid GMAT score may apply. The School will shortlist the candidates for interview based on the GMAT score and other applicable shortlisting criteria. The candidates have to appear for a personal interview either in person or online.

Question 15: How many seats are reserved for sponsored candidates?
There is no reservation for sponsored candidates. They are treated on par with others in that category.

Question 16: What are the selection criteria for receiving an invitation for PI?
Candidates have to appear for the CAT (Common Admission Test) 2024 conducted by IIMs. The selection criteria can be found here.

Question 17: Is the shortlisting for PI based on profile or only based on CAT score?
Please refer to question number 16.

Question 18: When is the PI process scheduled for candidates from India and those from abroad?
The PI process is scheduled from 6th to 9th March 2025 for candidates from India.

The process for candidates from abroad will be scheduled after the process for candidates from India is completed, and this will be communicated in due course by email.

Question 19: Will my request for rescheduling of the PI slot be considered?
Such requests shall be considered only under exceptional circumstances and the decision of the institute shall be final.

Question 20: When will the results of PI be declared?
The results will be declared on the website and the admissions portal tentatively in the first week of May 2025.

Queries related to differentiation of SJMSOM, IITB:

Question 21: What are the differentiators of SJMSOM?
The students benefit from the best curriculum which is relevant for the needs of the industry. The faculty are known for their expertise and achievements in research, training, and consultancy. The School also has associate faculty from other academic units of IIT Bombay, and visiting faculty from the industry to bring the practitioner’s perspective. The faculty and students will have access to various macroeconomic, industry, and corporate databases in addition to other e-resources. The institute offers the additional advantage of collaborating with other academic units and access to their resources for interdisciplinary research. The institute computer center provides access to softwares (MATLAB, Mathematica, Maple, and others), High-Performance Computing (HPC), VPN, and other IT services and facilities.

The Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE) at IIT Bombay is highly successful in fostering entrepreneurship and promoting start-ups. The business incubator provides the required support for the conversion of ideas into entrepreneurial ventures. It has nurtured more than 200 start-ups and 850 entrepreneurs raising more than Rs.5,500 crores in the process. The students will have the best entrepreneurial ecosystem to pursue their goals.

The events organized by our students, among others, include the Annual International Business Festival (Avenues), industry interaction sessions (Diksha), and seminars (Continuum). The students also organize various activities under the aegis of different activity clubs (Opera, Marktrix, Consig, Systematics, Finesse, Humane, E-club, and Spike). The success of our School is reflected in the achievements of its alumni who are occupying leadership positions in the industry and academia.

Question 22: What are the unique courses being offered at SJMSOM?

Question 23: What are the opportunities for research and projects for MBA students?
Many courses offer projects in addition to industry projects of duration ranging from 3 to 6 months. Students may also approach companies for live projects on a part-time basis. The students can also be part of start-up teams with those from other programs.

Question 24: What are the placement prospects for MBA students?
The School has been able to place all the students so far. Some of the recruiters, among others, include J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, TAS, Kearney, Coca-Cola, Deloitte, Hindustan Unilever, Amazon, P&G, Google Analytics, Asian Paints, Marico, PwC, Reliance Industries Ltd, Adani Enterprises Ltd., and others.
